Community safety
With the exception of a few hotspots, crime levels are very low across the area. However, the fear of crime is high and there has been an increase in antisocial behaviour on the sea-fronts of Ilfracombe and Combe Martin.
The MORI poll showed that many residents are concerned about youths “hanging around on street corners”... and yet young people are more likely to be the victims of crime than adults. There are not enough sporting or other facilities for young people, but there are opportunities to create new services.
Transform will:
- Put “feet on the street”, appointing two Neighbourhood Wardens to help solve residents’ problems, and another Police Community Support Officer to improve community safety;
- Employ a worker to help local groups find funding for sports projects;
- Work with the Extended Schools Programme and the Market and Coastal Town Initiative to create more recreation facilities;
- Provide information about crime statistics.
